Scooch
by Lisa Marie Sumner
Scooch sniffed the air and lifted his head. Sweet oven cooked smells had drifted from the kitchen to his dog bed in the foyer. Quietly, he stretched in the fractured rainbow light cast by the stained glass window by the front door.
Walking passed the door to the living room, his nails gently clicking on the hardwood floor, he yawned. Entering the kitchen he crawled under the dining room table, out of the way of the feet of women cooking.
It was a big affair. Scooch wasn’t used to so many people. The family was having a reunion with their extended kin. Their food was making him hungry.
At the far end of the table Scooch sniffed the feet of a toddler who promptly dropped half of her cinnamon roll. The shaggy rescue decided he would help her dispose of it, but he was spotted by Aunt Azalea and she shooed him away.
Scooch made his way out the door to the back yard, the bbq scents making his mouth water. Luckily, as he crossed the deck a middle schooler with a hot air balloon on her sweatshirt dropped her hotdog. No adults were close enough to stop Scooch from grabbing the goods this time. He ran with the hotdog and ate it in the front yard.
Hours later, after snagging a variety of normally forbidden snacks, Scooch made his way back to his bed. It was a satisfying day.
